'This was NOT brave!' Plus-size blogger slams those who praise larger women for baring their bodies insisting they shouldn't need courage to flaunt their figures
A
plus-size fashion blogger has blasted social media users who called her
'brave' after she posted a photo of herself wearing a one-piece swimsuit
on the beach.
Satellite Beach, Florida-based Jessica Kane, who runs the Life and Style of Jessica blog and is the founder of Skorch Magazine, posted the image, which shows her flaunting her curves in a hot pink-lined swimsuit, on her Facebook account last month, telling her followers in the caption: 'Eff the critics babygirl, and eff anyone else's version of beauty if it forces you to deny embracing moments like these.. live your life NOW [sic].'
And
amid all of the positive – and negative – reactions from her followers
to her post, Jessica, 35, was hailed by someone for her 'bravery' - a
comment which many might find flattering, but which Jessica found
incredibly offensive.
Baring all: Fashion blogger Jessica
Kane was dubbed 'brave' by followers after she posted this image of
herself sporting a one-piece swimsuit while on a trip to Los Angeles
Plus and proud: Jessica wrote that 'going with out a wrap would only take bravery if I cared what others thought of me, but I don't'
Re-posting the photo, which was taken during a weekend trip to Los Angeles, on her Facebook page on Tuesday, Jessica wrote: 'THIS WAS NOT BRAVE.'
She added: 'I've been told how brave I am for not having a coverup, but going with out a wrap would only take bravery if I cared what others thought of me, but I don't.'
'I
spend my time worrying about things I CAN control and this day, I was
only thinking about how fab I felt and how much sun I was catching.'
All
confidence: The writer and mother, who recently moved to Florida,
describes herself as a '30-something body confidence fashion blogging
pioneer'
Fun in the sun:
The body-confident blogger displays her dress sizes - '24 on top',
'26/28 on bottom' - and weight - 310 pounds as of January 2014 - on her
website, called Life and Style of Jessica
Jessica then illustrated her point using scenarios where she believes the description of 'brave' would be better used.
'A
family battling tragic illness, a mother trying to beat addiction, a
person trying to break free of domestic violence, reaching out for help
when you have already planned your suicide and feel like you can't
breathe one more day,' she wrote. 'THAT is brave. Not wearing a swimsuit
at the beach. LIVE life and only worry about what really matters.'
Jessica,
who describes herself on her blog as a '30-something body confidence
fashion blogging pioneer', certainly does not shy away from her size in
any respect, let alone in on-the-beach photos.
Plus and proud: Jessica claims to have been 'every size from 12 to 32 in the last 12 years' on her website
A social explosion: Jessica's Facebook page, where she champions body confisence and offers fashion tips, has over 80,000 likes
The
writer, who boasts over 80,000 followers on Facebook, proudly displays
her dress sizes and weight up-front on her website, noting that, as of
January 2014, she was a ’24 on top, 26/28 on bottom’ and that she weighed 310 pounds.
She also shares her health stats, 'since it's an inevitable conversation,' she argues.
Her
self-description reads: 'Normal blood pressure + cholesterol + sugars +
etc, no [polycistic ovary syndrome], no thyroid problems, I think my
metabolism has completely left the building however, I absolutely
believe the human body was meant to move and exercise is important! Get
those endorphins baby! [sic]'
After
the photo and her words made it to media outlets, the writer expressed
her surprise to her supporters on Instagram, writing: 'Wow, never did I
imagine this post would reach over 15MILLION in a day, like woah. #bodydiversity baby! #thisisntbrave / let's remember what IS brave.[sic]'
