The first photos of the Montauk Monster shocked the Internet and claimed a comfortable spot in cryptozoology books 
The above carcass was found washed ashore on a beach in Montauk, New York, in July 2008. There are many great quality photos taken of the monster, as well as accounts of thousands of tourist and locals that saw the creature.
What happened next is worthy of a conspiracy theory. The mysterious corpse vanished! At the same time, the local newspapers became flooded with “scientific reports” pointing the finger at an odd-looking raccoon that stayed far too long in sea water.
